How to Purchase Train Tickets in Moscow

First of all, it's advisable to purchase your Russian train tickets well in advance.  During the summer period Russian love to travel to their vacation destination by train and tickets get sold out weeks in advance.  The Moscow-St.Petersburg route is particularly difficult to obtain tickets in the summer, so plan in advance.

Purchasing Russian train tickets is difficult enough when you are already in Moscow.  It's even more difficult of you have not yet arrived in Russia and want to procure your tickets in advance.

For those that speak Russian or have a friend who is a Russian speaker and can assist you, you can purchase tickets directly from the Russian Railways online with no middle-men.  This is my favorite method because it avoids all the extra charges of travel companies.  Most travel companies who offer to assist you in purchasing tickets will charge 300 euros for a Moscow-St.Petersburg ticket which actually costs 35 euros online or at the station.  In my opinion this is nothing short of ticket scalping and taking advantage of tourists who are not familiar with Moscow and Russian prices.

Russian's purchase their tickets online in real-time here with no middlemen :

Intergroup Russia

While they do not offer a real-time option to purchase, Intergroup speaks English and responds to your inquires rather fast.  This might be a good option for you.

This company is a major online ticket vendor and can deliver the tickets to you :
