Pushkin Cafe

Many regard this as the best Russian cuisine restaurant in Russia. The location is also superb, right on Pushkin Square. This luxurious restaurant is located in a 19th century mansion with an ancient elevator. There are three main halls on three levels and the interior decor reminisces the early 20th century. The first level - the "Drugstore" room reminds of an old drugstore of the 19th century with such attributes as volumetric flasks,

measuring glasses and pharmaceutical scales. The second level - the "Library" room with telescopes and terrestrial globes, bookshelves and ancient woodcuts. The third level: is the balcony of the "Library" room. The covered summer terrace is situated on the roof of the restaurant. Other rooms are "Wine shop" and "Fireplace".

1, Red Square

Their specialty is a "Historical Menu" which is a delightful meal prepared from imperial menus found in the historical archives which were served to the nobility more than 100 years ago. The restaurant is located in the same building as the History Museum, on Red Square.

Expedition

If you are looking for a restaurant in the center which is very unusual and uniquely Russian, then visit "Expedition". This restaurant / entertainment complex specializes in everything from the Russian Artic. It's more than just a restaurant - it's an experience and an adventure. (Besides the retaurant, Expedition sponsors a cross-country race from Vladivostok to Murmansk.) Downstairs in the basement is a large store offering all required camping gear if you were to go on an extended adventure to the north. Also, you can find wonderful hand-made woodcrafts made by the natives in the Russian artic. Upstairs is a restaurant known for its artic cuisine such as smoked Reindeer with salted black milk mushrooms or Kamchatka salmon caviar with sour cream and spring onions. Also on the menu is marinated Elk meat grilled, with cep mushrooms fried in sour cream, cabbages, potatoes with sauce from rock cranberries and cloudberries. Expedition is a favorite restaurant of the upper-levels of the Russian government. On March 2, 2008 President Putin and his selected successor Dmitry Medvedev celebrated the Presidential election victory of Medvedev here. When one of the guests requested a dish that was not available, Putin was overheard saying, "Don't worry, we'll come back next week".

Shinok

Shinok is a recreation of a Ukrainian peasant house. The walls are decorated with embroidered towels and shelves with original Ukrainian kitchenware. In the centre of the restaurant there is a small yard with live domestic poultry and cattle: hens, turkeys, a sheep, cow and small rabbit. Don't worry, they are all behind glass! There are 6 small rooms around the yard. Four of them have windows with the view of the yard.

Central Writers Club

Housed in an old, stately mansion from the 1890's, the setting itself is worth the visit. The Central House of Writers Restaurant offers exotic treats like Grilled Venison, Mushroom Soup served with fried mushrooms or Pelmeni stuffed with smoked duck under basil sauce. The restaurant is housed and owned by the Central Writers Club, hence the name. This club has been the central meeting place for the elite among Soviet and now Russian writers and poets for more than 70 years. Sitting in the restaurant you might well be rubbing elbows with the most famous of Russian writers who gather there on a regular basis.

Bochka

Bochka recreates the atmosphere of a medieval Russian tavern. There is a large hearth in the center of the restaurant, where meats are prepared. A very warm, cozy atmosphere. The food is delicious.
