Inexpensive Russian Cuisine in Moscow

Elki Palki

This is a chain of 35 inexpensive Russian cuisine casual restaurants. It was one of the first projects of Arkdy Novikov, the legendary Moscow restaurateur. Each restaurant is designed to look like a traditional Russian hut in a village, complete with horse saddles and woodworking equipment. I recommend the pelmeni (Russian dumplings) and the borscht. Try the Kvas, a non-alcoholic traditional drink unlike anything you've tried before. They also have a very nice filet of trout. The menu is not very extensive, but what they offer is very nice. Ask for the menu in English. Below is my favorite location, but you can select the one closest to you from their web site. Expect to pay around 300 rubles for a meal with a beer.

Grabli

Grabli now has 6 restaurants around the city, with the largest and most central near the Tretyakov Galleries. It works on a buffet style principle and has a lovely, fresh, open atmosphere. The menu is mostly Russian with a twist of creativity thrown in. Overall very affordable (about 300 rubles for a nice meal) and surprisingly good food and excellent variety. Added to the fact that my favorite one is located in the Zamosvkrechie historical area of Moscow, which is full of wonderful sightseeing, this certainly should be a destination restaurant. Moo Moo

Moo Moo was the first of the self-serve Russian cuisine chains to open in Moscow. Inside is a wooden decoration with a Russian village theme. There's a large selection of Russian cuisine at inexpensive prices. They offer a great selection from the grill.

Uncle Vanya

A rather small, homey Russian cuisine restaurant. Simple with all the classics, not expensive, good beer. Located close to the Tretyakov Galleries. You can take a look at their menu online here : http://dvrest.com/en/menu.htm
