Cathedral of the Annunciation
Cathedral of the Annunciation (Blagoveshchenskiy sobor) is the golden-domed cathedral, which served as the private church of the grand dukes and tsars.
A wooden church was built on this site in 1397 by Vasily I. In 1484 Ivan The Great rebuilt the Catherdral to serve as the royal family's private chapel.
Restored in 1562-64, the cathedral is lofty and narrow, with an interior that seems far more "Russian" than the other Kremlin cathedrals.
Most significantly, it houses some of the finest icons in Russia, with works by Theophanes the Greek and Andrei Rublev (a famous Russian icon painter). |
