Treasures of the Kremlin

In Russian, Kremlin means fortified stronghold.  In fact, some other major Russian cities have their own Kremlin as well.  But the  Kremlin of Moscow is the one known around the world.

The Moscow Kremlin is a symbol of the Russian state. It is a  rich treasury of historical relics and monuments of Russian culture and art. The Kremlin is situated in the center of the capital of Russia on top of Borovitskiy hill, overlooking the Moskva River.

The Kremlin has served as the heart and soul of Russia since the times of Yuri Dolgorukki.  When the Orthodox Church established their headquarters in Moscow in 1326, they selected the Kremlin, where the Prince also sat.  Ivan The Great, around 1500, dreamed of building a capital which would equal Contantinople in  grandeur and importance. He called his dream the "Third Rome" and brought stonemasons and architects from Italy.  Most of their work is still standing.

In 1935 Stalin removed the imperial double-headed eagles from the wall's towers and replaced them with the red glass stars which can be seen today.

Only in 1955 was the Kremlin opened to the public as a museum.

In 1990, the architectural ensemble of the Moscow Kremlin and its treasures, Red Square and Aleksandrovskiy Sad (the Alexandrov Gardens) were included into the World Heritage List of UNESCO.
