Internet Access in Moscow

Visitors to Moscow have all the standard methods of internet access available to them.  Wi-Fi, Internet Cafes and broadband and all readily available.  And for those dinosaurs still roaming the earth, there is dial-up, though basically you can completely avoid this last option. If you bring your laptop with you, don't waste any time and go directly to the section below on Golden Wi-Fi.

Internet Cafes in the Center

following is a list of the two best and most central network of internet cafes in Moscow.

TIMEONLINE

Timeonline was the first western-style internet salon in Moscow.  They have two locations.  The best one is also probably the most central in Moscow.  It's located in the Manezh mall center, right next to Red Square and the Kremlin.  They have around 200 computers and are open 24 hours. They also offer a full array of services including copying CDs, flash cards, printing etc.  One hour of internet costs 100 rubles during the daytime and 70 rubles during night.

Address : Manezhnaya Ploshad, Manezh Mall. Bottom level.

Metro : Okhotniy Ryad

Tel. (495) 988-64-26/ 25

CAFEMAX

Cafemax is the largest internet salon in Moscow.  They actually have several, with the main ones at Pytanitskaya (near Tretyakovsky Galleries, not far from the Kremlin to the South), Novoslobodskaya and Moscow State University.  My favorite is the one at Pynitskaya.  They have in excess of 300 computers and they are open 24 hours.  They offer complete computer and business services including scanning, copying, even printing your Moscow pictures on a mug or a t-shirt.  They have a nice coffee shop to relax in as well.  Prices are very moderate, about 60 rubles per hour, depending on when.

Address : ul. Pyatnitskaya 25

Metro : Tretyakovskaya, Novokuznetskaya

Tel. 781 97-31/32

WI-FI (wireless internet) access points in Moscow

Thankfully central Moscow is now nearly completely covered by Wi-Fi.  There are three leading providers : Golden Wi-Fi, Yandex Wi-Fi and Moscom.

Free  Wi-Fi internet access points in Moscow

Yandex, the leading Russian search engine and Russian version of Google, offers many hot-spots in Moscow which are free.  Most are at restaurants and cafes.

Here is a map by metro station where you can locate the nearest Yandex hot spot.

Golden Wi-Fi also offers a large number of free access points, including about 5 McDonald's in the center.  Check out their free locations here :

Subscription Wi-Fi internet access points across Moscow

Golden Telecom is one of the largest telecommunications companies in Russia.  They offer a subscription based service which has nearly complete coverage of Moscow.  For only 500 rubles per month you can have high-speed access with no limits on time or volume.  This is definitely the best deal in Moscow! In fact, there are very few points in Moscow, where it is not reachable.  Below is a map of their coverage around Tverskaya. You can see it's nearly perfect.
