Vasilchikova House (Chess Club)

In the 1820s the Vasilchikov family built two houses in the Classical style. The son of the owners, N. A. Vasilchikov, was connected with the Decembrists, and after his return from exile in the 1830s the houses were sold to the Zubov family. Soon the two houses were joined together into one, and the facade was reworked in the Renaissance style. In 1865 it was sold to the von Mekk family, and in 1875 an annex in the Eclectic style was added by architect D. N. Chichagov. The richly decorated interiors from that time have been preserved. Beginning in 1899 the house belonged to the Zimins, whose guests included S. I. Taneev, A. K. Glazunov, S.V. Rakhmaninov, and F. 1. Shaliapin. In 1923 the Supreme Court of the RSFSR moved into the building, and since 1956 it has housed the Central Chess Club and the Chess Museum dating from 1980.
