Shilov Art Gallery

Address : Znamenka 5

The two story house with a mezzanine in the classical style was built by F.M. Shestakov for E.D. Tyurin in the 1820's. A third sotry was added in 1881 when the building was decorated in the Eclectic style.  Since 2000 it has housed A.M. Shlov's Picture Gallery.

Znamenka ulitsa is one of the oldest streets in Moscow. In the 12th century it was part of the Volotsk trade road connecting Novgorod with cities on the Oka River. It began at the Borovitsky Bridge over the Neglinnaya River and ended at the Arbatsky Gate of the White City. In the 14th and 15th centuries it was lined with the suburban homes of prominent Moscow boyars. The Streltsy Quarter was located here in the sixteenth century. The street retained its aristocratic character until the end of the 19th century. It was named after the Church of the Sign (Znamenskaya tserkov), one of five churches located here, all of which were demolished during the Soviet period.
