Shchukin House

This manor dating from the mid-18th century was acquired by Prince. V. A. Khovansky n 1805. In 1882 it was purchased by the merchant I. V. Shchukin, who in 1886 gave it to his son S. I. Shchukin, a well known philanthropist and collector of Western European painting. Shchukin's rich collection of Impressionist pictures was on display here, and musical gatherings were organized with the participation of prominent Moscow composers. In 1913 the house was renovated in the Style Moderne by L. N. Kekushev. In 1929 the Shchukin gallery was moved to Prechistenka 21.
