The Emperor Alexander III Museum of Fine Arts (The Pushkin Museum)

The building is located on the site of the former Carriage Yard, a manege, and a transit prison. The founding of the Museum of Fine Arts (after 1917 the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts) is connected with the name of Professor I. V. Tsvetaev, who intended to collect copies of all significant works of world sculpture for the teaching collection at Moscow University. The majestic white marble building was constructed in 1898-1912 by R.I. Klein and was largelyfinanced by the well known patron of the arts Yu. S. NechaevMaltsev. The layout is typical of 19th-century museums. Broad areas of smooth stone are faced in large marble slabs. Deep loggias and a sculptured frieze by G. R. Zaleman are notable features of the facade. Interiors of the museum such as the Greek and Italian rooms and the Egyptian and Roman halls are exhibits in themselves. Significantly enlarged during the Soviet period, the collection of the museum is now world famous.
