The Golitisyn Mansion

address : Volkhonka ulitsa 14/1

The estate dates to the 17th century, when it belonged to the boyar B. G. Yushkov. The Princes Golitsyn acquired it in 1738. The main house in the Baroque style was built in 1759-1766 by S. I. Chevakinsky. In 1774 it and the neighboring buildings became part of the Prechistenka Palace erected by M. F. Kazakov and were renovated to accommodate a visit by Catherine II, but they were soon dismantled. The arched gates and openwork grate from the 18th century have survived. In the 19th century the estate was partially redone in the Empire style. At that time it contained M. A. Golitsyn's extensive collection of paintings, china, and jewelry, which was transferred to the Hermitage in 1886. Beginning in the late 19th century the buildings of the estate were allotted to various institutions, including the Moscow Conservatory and the Moscow Art Society. There were also apartments here that were home to the playwright A. N. Ostrovsky, the Slavophile I. S. Aksakov, and Professor and Mayor of Moscow B. N. Chicherin. The main building lost its individuality in 1928, when it was reconstructed to house the Communist Academy. The building belonging to the estate on the corner of Bolshoi Znamensky Lane was designed by V. G. Zalessky and until 1917 was the Hotel Knyazhy dvor (Prince's Court). Since 1987 it has housed the Museum of Private Collections, a filial of the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts founded on the initiative of I. S. Zilbershtein.
