Sightseeing Moscow

The Golden Ring area, immediately to the west of the Kremlin, holds some of the richest history and architecture in Moscow. Included here are some of the most famous museums, and the largest and most elegant Church in all of Russia, Christ the Savior.  We divide the tour into two walks.  The first, to the right, is in red.  The second (shorter walk), to the left, is in blue.

This area originally contained a number of villages and settlements situated along the ancient road to Novgorod.  Located on a site known as "Chertolie" (the devil's land) were the Tsar's Carriage Yard, which was razed in the 1880's and the Convent of St. Alexis dating from 1572, which was later moved to Krasnoye Selo in connection with construction of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.  The Moscow nobility subsequently built residences in the quarter formerly belonging to the Stretsy military corps and the estates of the Oprichniki, Ivan the Terrible's administrative elite. In 1774 a palace for Catherine the Great was erected here but was dismantled after only year.  1912 saw the construction of the Museum of Fine Arts, which in the Soviet period became the chief point of interest in the area after the destruction of Christ the Savior (which was rebuilt in the 1990's).
