The Puskin Museum is the premier foreign art museum in Moscow.  It’s famous for it’s Impressionist and Postimpressionist paintings.  The extensive Impressionist collection is founded on the collection of two famous Moscow patrons of the arts – Sergei Shchukin and Ivan Morozov.  You will find works by Manet, Monet, Renoir and sculptures by Rodin. 

 

2. Rerikh Gallery

Nikolay (Nicolas) Rerikh was a famous Russian artist from the late 19th/early 20th centuries.  He is known for his rich, bold colors and mystical themes from Siberia, Central Asia and India.  The museum was founded by his son, Sergei, and is located in the 17th century Lopukhin manor, a very impressive palace worth seeing on it’s own.

 This museum is simply spectacular!  Be sure to note, the gardens and walk around the museum are spectacular as well. The State Tretyakov Gallery is the national treasury of Russian fine art and one of the greatest museums in the world. It is simply spectacular, holding the world’s best collection of Russian icons and other Pre-revolutionary Russian art. The Gallery's collection consists entirely of Russian art and artists who have made а contribution to the history of Russian art or been closely connected with it. The collection contains more than 130 000 works of painting, sculpture and graphics, created throughout the centuries by successive generations of Russian artists.  Russian art works, ranging in date from the 11th to the early 20th century, are on the show in Gallery's historic building on Lavrushinskiy Pereulok.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

4. New Tretyakov Gallery

Specializes in 20th century Russian art.  Paintings by Russian avant-garde artists of the 1900s – early 1920s (Malevich, Kandinsky, Shagal, Filonov, Popova), art works featuring “socialist realism” – the official style of totalitarian state in 1930-50s and the art of avant-garde “second wave” of 1960-80s.

 

5. Museum of Private Collections

Located next to the Pushkin museum, this smallish museum displays art collections donated by private invidivuals, many who amassed their collection during the Soviet period.  Specialties are the Ilya Silberstein collection,  a collection of Old Believer icons from the 16th centuries.  The Lemkul room exhibits glassworks.
