Architectural Moscow
With a history spanning 850 years, Moscow has a vast variety of architectural styles. Up until the Revolution in 1917 Moscow was a rather small, provincial city in comparison to the capital, St. Peteresburg. When Lenin moved the capital to Moscow in 1918, the growth of Moscow exploded. It quickly overcame St. Petersburg in size.
This article focuses on two of the most important architectural styles to emerge over the past 100 years.
The first one, Russian Art Nouveau, arose during the golden age of Moscow, immediately prior to World War I and the Revolution. One of the leaders of this movement was Fyodor Schechtel. You can learn more about Schechtel and take a tour of his work here.
The second one, Avant-Garde, began in 1926, when construction resumed following the break from World War I. It lasted about 10 years and was led by Konstantin Melnikov. You can learn more about Melnikov and take a tour of his work here.
