A modest selection of budget hostels has opened Moscow. During the summer, it's best to book early as they get packed from June through August. Here are the ones that we recommend.

Comrade Hostel

Operated by Dennis, a very friendly young Russian. Has one 8 bed dormitory, one 10 bed dormitory and a kitchen and lounge with internet. Has two showers. Location is in Kitai Gorod, very close walk to the Kremlin.

Godzillas Hostel

Godzillas is Moscow's largest hostel. It's located in the center, close to Pushkin square in the center. Very central, though some find the side street it's located on a little scary at night. 4 bathrooms and 4 toilets. A total of close to 70 beds with a mixture of dormitories and private rooms for two.

Napoleon Hostel

Great location, well-organized and comfortably equipped with air-conditioning in the summer. Probably Moscow's favorite party hostel as it's owned/operated by a young British / Russian team who are very friendly and it's located next to some of the best clubs in the city. It's within easy walking distance of the Kremlin. Has about 50 beds. Downside is that it has only two showers and there are long lines for them when the hostel is full.

Sweet Moscow

Located on the famous walking street Old Arbat, it's great from those of you who want to open their door and find key tourist hotspots right on their doormat. It's a rather small, cozy place with just 3 dorm rooms or 6 and 8 beds for a total of 20 beds. The Russian student staff are very friendly and helpful. Owned and operated by and American / Russian husband wife team who also own Suharevka Mini-Hotel

All-Russian Exhibition Dormitory

While this option is not in the very center, it might be good for those who have not booked in advance. It's located near the All-Russian Exhibition Center and has a large variety of dormitory and private rooms. Very inexpensive, from 250 rubles per person. However they do not speak English.
